David Becker
Head of Legal, International Cricket Council

David joined the International Cricket Council (ICC) in November 2007 as Senior Counsel - Commercial and Business and was shortly thereafter promoted to the senior executive team as Head of Legal of the ICC.

After practising with Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs in South Africa, David moved to international law firm Freshfields in 1998. Thereafter, David practiced as a specialist sports lawyer in London for 8 years, first as an associate with sports specialists Townleys and then as partner with Collyer Bristow.

David has advised a range of leading businesses, governing bodies and athletes in his career as a sports lawyer, such as NIKE, Vodafone, the International Rugby Board, England & Wales Cricket Board, Paralympic World Cup, Ben Ainslie OBE, Ernie Els, Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and Royal Thames Yacht Club. He has been listed as a leader in the field of Sports


Law by Legal 500 and Chambers legal directories since 2004. David has written chapters in the first edition of Sport: Law and Practice by Taylor and Lewis, and recently published the first book dedicated to the legal aspects of event management, entitled The Essential Legal Guide to Events.

David has varied personal interests. He co-founded the international Aids charity Starfish in 2001, which now supports over 30,000 children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/Aids in Southern Africa. He teaches accelerated learning strategies to kids and recently published a book on the teaching of life skills to kids entitled 50 Life Skills to Ensure Your Kids Stay In School, Off Drugs and Out of Trouble. He has run 27 marathons including the 7-day Sahara Ultra-marathon in Morocco and has competed in the World Memory Championships and the Mind Sports Olympiad.
